Its been another busy week at the Brenig reservoir as we enjoy something of an Indian summer, with the exception of Wednesday, which was rather wet!!
The warm sunny conditions, coupled with decent cloud cover on many days has seen anglers enjoy excellent top of the water sport.
September is often the best month of the year at Brenig as there is such a profusion of fly life on the water and this week has been no exception.
Both bank and boat anglers have been finding feeding fish on most areas of the lake, but particular hotspots have been Nantglyn bank, North end island, West bank, Visitor centre shoreline and Hafod Lom.
Methods that have been successful this week have mainly been dry fly tactics or nymphs fished just under the surface, with patterns such as Hoppers, Bibios, Diawl bach, Pheasant Tail nymphs and various buzzers doing the damage!
Over three hundred anglers have fished Brenig this week and from catch returns we’ve received back has showed an average of five fish per rod, fish are averaging 2lbs in weight with four and five pounders not an uncommon sight on catch returns!
Highlight of the week took place on Saturday as Brenig staged the Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water/ Airflo Pairs competition. This match is organized by Brenig fishery staff Alwyn Roberts and Nathan Midgely with sponsorship by Airflo. The match is fished to international rules with excellent prizes on offer such as a five hundred pound cheque for the winning pair, a top of the range rod for each of the runners up, fly reels for the third place pairs and top lady and top individual plus a goody bag for every entrant which contained a top Airflo fly line. On top of all this anglers were treated to a superb post match meal of hog roast carvery! With all this in mind, its no wonder that this match is establishing itself as a highlight of the competition scene.
After a great days fishing the winning pair were Dean Kibble and Anthony Cartwright who succesfully defended the title they won last year! They came in with 32 fish for 48lb, in second place came Ady Nixon and Hefin Jones with 23 fish for 35lb with Nathan Midglely and Kieron Jenkins in Third place.
This week Brenig play host to the Commonwealth fly fishing match which sees anglers from the commonwealth countries competing over three days, in fact many of the South African, Australian and Canadian anglers have been fishing Brenig last week as a practice and have thoroughly enjoyed the quality of the fishing at Brenig. We wish them all the best in the forthcoming match. _________________ Species caught on fly to date - 46

The last week has seen some differing weather conditions, with good weather at the start and end of the week, and strong winds midweek. Water temperatures have been 15° C.
Fishing conditions have continued to be good, with a rod average of 4.1 fish. The best areas have been along the Nantglyn Bank and
Hafod Lom woods, with floating lines and dry flies encouraging the best catches.
The Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships were held at the Brenig (and on the Dee) on Friday and Saturday, with Scotland’s men’s team coming in first, followed by Wales A and B in second and third respectively. Top individuals were Jake Harvey (Scot), Keiron Jenkins (Wales), and Dave Shipman (Eng). Top lady was Susan Sissons (Eng).
In addition, the Foxon’s Trout League came to a close on Sunday, with the Brenig Badgers ending the season in first place. Top rod was John Buchanan, with 35 fish (39.05 kg) from the 6 rounds. Best fish was a tie between Chris Jones and Gareth Jones (5 lb 5 oz each)
This week sees the last major competition of the season, with the home nations international. Hopefully the good weather will stay with us a bit longer, however.
There are still spaces available for the pike week which will be 30th October – 3rd November, though these are filling up fast. Bookings can be made through the Ranger’s Office on 01490 420 463. _________________ Species caught on fly to date - 46

This week has seen some variation in the weather, which has called for a change in fishing methods from day to day. The water temp is still around 15 C. This week rod average is still a healthy 4.9 and with another two stockings to go it should still fish well to the end of the season, which finishes on Sunday October the 29th.
This week saw the international fly fishing competition come to Brenig. This was the autumn match. The match was on Friday and everyone set off in high hopes as they had had three very good practice days. Scotland came first with 94 fish for 161 lb 14.375 oz, in second place came Ireland with 85 fish for 146 lb 5.625 oz, just behind Ireland came Wales, who only caught 4 fish less, they had 81 fish for 142 lb 3.875 oz, and in last place came England with 62 fish for 108 lb 10.875 oz. The brown bowl went to Robert Reilly of Ireland who caught 12 fish for 22 lb 3.625, and the H. Emyr Lewis Trophy went to Keith Nicholson of England who caught the heaviest fish of the day at 3 lb 8.625 oz.
This week has seen the vast majority of the lake fishing well but the best hotspots have been the bottom of Brenig arm for the boats and banks alike. Other hotspots have been Tower Bay, Ring of Stones and Hafod Lom woods. The best methods this week have been Dry fly patterns, and fast/slow glass lines fished with mini Lures and dabblers for the bank and for the boats the methods have been much the same but boobys on slow sinking lines have also been doing well. _________________ Species caught on fly to date - 46

Its been a quiet week at Brenig with very few boat or bank anglers about, but the anglers who have made it up to the reservoir have been rewarded with excellent sport.
The weather has been a bit of a mixed bag with torrential downpours, strong winds and some glorious sunshine and the temperatures have been about average for the time of year.
There are still some very good hatches about and anglers have reported good top of the water sport on some days.
Favoured methods have been dries and nymphs on floater or slow sink lines and also various types of booby and mini lures fished on sinkers or intermediates.
Hotspots for the week have been Hafod Lom woods, Tower Bay, Duck island, Nantglyn bank and watersports bay.
The lake had its final bumper stocking last week and with still a good head of resident fish in the water the final few weeks of the season should be very good if the weather holds out!!
Last day of the season will be Sunday 29th October 2006. _________________ Species caught on fly to date - 46

Its been a quiet week at Brenig this week as we draw up to closing day with very few boat or bank anglers venturing out, but the ones who have made it here have been rewarded with some excellent sport.
The weather has been a bit of a mixed bag with downpours, wind and some sunshine and the temperatures have been about average for the time of year. Rod Average is currently still at 4 per angler, this being a great average for this time of the year!

Report 6th Nov
Last week at Llyn Brenig we opened for experts to come along and see what specimen pike they could lure out the depths of Brenig. Monday was the most popular day of the week with all of the boats filled with anglers from all over the U.K. in search of the Brenig monster!. The favoured areas were Sailing Club Bay, Duck Island and Brenig Arm mostly due to these areas having weed beds and plenty of tree stumps for the pike to lie in ambush for passing trout and perch fry. With fewer but larger pike caught this year, smaller pike may have been preyed upon by thier larger brethren and hopefully this will continue, resulting in a small stock of very big pike in a couple of years time. The best pike of the week was a massive 25lb 15oz caught by Mr Sheader, this pike was 1 of 4 over 20lb with Dave Kelbrick of Chester taking a 21lb 1oz pike on a Fox Replicant Perch Pattern. We believe that Brenig will be producing thirty pounders within three years and the lake is on track to do just that. Two local anglers: Adrian Nixon and Hefin Jones caught 8 pike between them weighing between 3 and 10lb all taken on dead sprat bait. These lads are fly fishermen and new to pike fishing congratulations!. We will be running a pike week again in November 2007. Brenig re-opens for fly-fishing on Saturday March 17th 2007 hope you all over winter well until then. _________________ Species caught on fly to date - 46

This opening weekend saw the weather starting off well with overcast weather interrupted by sunny intervals. The wind was blowing in a southerly direction on Saturday with the air temperature at 6 C. The weather changed dramatically on Sunday with Snow and high winds blowing from south to west. This made the air temperature a lot colder with it being at –1 C. Also as it was mothering Sunday a lot of fishermen were made to stay at home. The water temperature is 5.5 C.
However this did not put any anglers off with 180 anglers braving the weather conditions and everyone had good bags. The average fish size is 2lb 4oz. The average bag is a very health 5.04 fish per angler. Former Brenig record holder, Gerald Taylor of Wrexham had the best bag of the weekend with 6 fish for 22lb. Unfortunately he did not let us know what he caught them on !!
The hotspots of the week have been Tower Bay, between the Visitor Centre and Dam and all around the Sailing Club for bank Fishermen. On the boat the hotspots have been Sailing Club, Hafod Lom Woods, between the Visitor Centre and the Dam and Llech Daniel Coves. Both boat and bank have been fishing well.
The best flies of the week have been Vivas, Orange, Black, Olive, Green and White, Black and Green Lures. Also Boobies and Blobs of various colours have been working well as have Black and Orange buzzers. The best lines of the weekend were floating/intermediate lines with gold heads. Also sinking Airflo 40 yards plus lines either Di 7 or Di 5 with a booby have been working well. _________________ Species caught on fly to date - 46

This week saw the weather get off to a wet, windy and cold start but brightening up for a glorious weekend. The wind has been blowing in a northerly direction. The water temperature is 5.1 C.
Although the weather has not been the best it did not put some fishermen off, and those who did come reported good bags. The rod average has dropped a bit from opening weekend but is still a healthy 4.43. The biggest rainbow of the week went Mr K Evans of Bromborough who weighed it in at 7lb 2oz. Also a 6lb blue trout was caught by Mr M Hodges of Mold. The best bag of the week went to Martin Griffiths of Warrington who caught 6 fish for 21lb 8oz. Mr K Evans from Bromborough was not far behind him with 6 fish for 19lb 14oz and Mr B Thomas of Mold also had a good bag of 6 fish weighing in at 19lb.
The Ring of Stones, Nantglyn Bank, Tower Bay and between the Visitor Centre and Dam are all doing very well of the bank. With the best method being Floating lines with gold heads and Intermediate lines with small lures and Cormorants. The hotspots for boat anglers have been The Quarry, Hafod Lom Woods, Nantglyn bank and Sailing Club Bay. The best method off boats have been Di 3, Di 5 and Di7 airflo 40 yard plus lines fished with boobies.
Top flies of the week have been Coral, black, orange boobies, cormorants, black and green, cats whiskers and orange lures, olive nate. Slimmer flies have been working the best when the sun has been out. _________________ Species caught on fly to date - 46
