Hi all,

Here is a link to the petition for the crazy EU subsidies law which forces UK's sea fisherman to discard 50% of their catch to be reversed. 50% of all usable edible fish is discarded before it even reaches our shores. Disgraceful IMO.

Please add your name to this link:

Cheers

Truly outrageous scenes in the programme. We all know that discards happen - I for one certainly never realised the scale on which it goes on.

The comparison from the politician that if a farmer took 100 lambs to slaughter and then 50 were 'discarded' back into a heap in a field would lead to riots in the street was spot on.

Something badly needs to change.

Another example of what the EU does for us! It's not just a tradgedy its a disgrace - total waste. Yes we need to conserve fish stocks and protect any species considered in danger but whoever dreamt up this system must have had one too many lavish 6 course lunches in Brussels! Hmmmm, Brussels....now there would be a way of saving some money! Lets hope HFW has as much success with this as he did promoting free range chicken.

i really dont think i could chuck those fish away even if it was my lively hood, found it hard to watch

The problem lies if boats are alowed to sell all their "by catch". then they could fish for ANY species, and claim they were fishing for there alowed secies and quota, but they happned to catch loads of bass or somthing.

If they are allowed to keep everything and decide to fish for a newish species that only reach maturity once they are 20 years old, it is likely that they will be wiped out fairly fast. Or if every boat wanted to "fish for cod" but they were realy going after a more expensive rare species and claimed it was just bycatch.

Its also rediculous that it takes 3-4kg of pilchards to make 1kg of salmon but thats the way it works...even though the smaller fish have the bigger health benifits.

signed!!!

- doesnt help when the chinese fishing head men were making up figures for years to make it look like stocks of fish were massive so quotas were upped by a very large percent, even though they had been taking way more than alowed in the first place!

I haven't watched the programmes so my opinion may change after I have. However .....

The problem is that there are too many boats chasing too few fish. On the face of it discarding fish when you are over quota is pure madness but how else can you disincentivise trawler skippers from exceeding their quotas?

If they could profit from continuing to fish after they had met their quota then I'm sure they would do so. It would be 'sorry mate, we caught them by accident and anyway, if we don't catch them the French will'.

And the greater madness would continue. Sad

He has his critics but I have always held a certain admiration for Hugh and has now gone up even further in my estimation.

Totally agree Alan.
The fishing fleet isn't absolved from blame by current activities or past greed.

I don't know much about the issues regarding Salmon farming, but based on the points he was raising, I get the feeling they ran out of airtime.
Could have questioned a lot of those practices far more vigorously than they did, seemed to let them off.

Why is the bycatch not simply auctioned off and the proceeds given to charity?

When I signed up, there were 65,000 names on the list, now there is 260,000. Good on HFW for trying to sort this mess out.
Thanks for adding your names as well chaps!!

It is a very complicated issue with arguments from both sides that weren't properly explored by the programme. It is sickening to see fish wasted like that, but I would have liked to have seen more detailed explanations of alternatives to the existing policy. The fisherman seemed to be in favour of a system with "limited days fishing, keep everything you catch" but what if a boat's allocated fishing period coincided with a very stormy period? - they would be tempted to keep fishing when it would be dangerous to do so. And that expensive boat could potentially be sitting in harbour for days on end during ideal fishing conditions. Would boat owners be happy then?

It seems to me that the conservation of common fishery stocks is at odds with a free market economy. The skipper's ultimate aim is to catch as many fish as possible in the shortest possible time and to exploit every loophole in the law to maximise profit. Balancing that with a sustainable conservation strategy is a nightmare.

I think the ultimate solution is for a change to our perception to the fish we eat. The vast majorty of cod in this country is sold through cheap and cheerful chippies where it is overcooked and battered to death and is generally indistinguishable from almost any other white fish. It is a wild creature from the deep ocean - perhaps we should start recognising that and be prepared to pay a premium for it. Maybe then the average chippy would be forced to cook it properly!

What shocked me on this programme were 2 things

1. The guy at Marine Harvest did not know what were in the pellets they fed to the salmon
2. The obvious lack of interest from the woman who heads up EU fisheries. She only "appeared" in front of the camera to "appear" concerned....and she isn't

How can it make sense to require 3kg of feed to produce 1kg of meat?
