This is how I do a mono extension ,, this pattern is primarily for Bass but could be used for pike too

Hook in vice and a good thread base .

Take a piece of heavy mono .. I use 150lb but you can use lighter if you want ,, and burn the end to form a blob

Apply some superglue to the thread bed on the hook and whip your mono extension on .. apply more superglue once its whipped

reverse the hook in the vice and apply a thread bed to the end of the mono extension ..again varnish or superglue

do your first tie in of materials

With the extension pictured above with the bucktail .. its 8" from the eye to the end of the bt

The bt could be a support for hackles for a sempre fly or a large flatwing .. or it could be turned into a hollow fleye . a huge sloopy droopy or whatever you want

So.. Part two

I'm building this as a hollow fleye ala Mr Popoviics

Its pretty straightforward until the colour blend starts so no commentary up until then

This is where I would start to add the colours .. you want to keep the underside or belly white , but start adding colour to the topside . so the bottom half of the mono is done with white and the top with a pale yellow in this instance

When I get a few ties from the head .. I make the clumps denser, so the fly will move water as its being stripped

In this last pic the fly has just been shaped ... i.e held under the hot tap for a few mins
When it dries .. I'll add the eyes etc

Few more pics

I've tried to light the fly so you can see the ties ... Dunno if it worked as intended or not ..but you get an idea of its profile

Andy

Excellent Andy I love the profile.
Usually when I have seen people doing extensions they crimp the end to be tied down to get a better bed , but there looks nothing wrong with your style.
Thanks for showing
Kevin
