Sad The first competition for 07 was a complete wash out with 4-5 m swells crashing on the bar, enough to discourage even the most foolhardy, so fishing was restricted to harbour limits only.
This comp is known as the Farmers Tournament where the organizers canvass all the local farm supplies outlets and the array of prizes is astonishing, all up around $18,000 in various forms, ranging from drill presses to tonne lots of fert to bundles of posts, $500 vouchers and bags of dog food, you name it and it was there, granted all of a farming nature.
Altough the fishing was not that flash a very convivial time was had by all.

Laughing The Second comp, The Kawhia One Base attracted a capacity field, 60 boats in all, ranging from 4.5m tinnes ( alloy ) to 15m charter boats, most boats were in the 6 to 7m range.
Weather was fantastic, the bar and boat channel were dead flat where as the weekend before both were unworkable.

Rolling Eyes Fishing was patchy to say the least, long periods of no activity for hours on end, we averaged 80 to 90 miles a day, heading out to where the bait fish were working, about 15 to 30 miles offshore.
Laughing One marlin was landed ( 200lbs ) unfortunately I was not back in time to take a photo before it was cut up for smoking.
Several mako sharks were tagged and released, no Yellowfin tuna were caught, several Albacore Tuna were landed, the largest was 20 odd lbs
Looking back at NZ early on Friday morning in perfect conditions. We run 2 80s Penns off the outriggers ( not in photo ) and 2 Shimano 50w's on the short corners and 2 smaller sets for albies and skippies in the centre.
In the Kingfish section I was fortunte to land the best of the comp and was rewarded with a nice Penn Rod and Reel set.
All the prizes were Quality Penn gear and much apprieciated by the winners on the day

The kingi, just over 30lb, and me looking a little weary after 10 hours on the water.

Cheers
