The canals near me have been rock hard too. I have caught precisely zero. Not even a little perch. I have turned my attention to the Bristol Channel where I have at least had a couple of fish.

As I have not been able to get out and fish I have been messing about with my editing skills for my YouTube channel.
Let me know what you think.
Very Happy

Peter, I see that you noticed it's "hackle" rather than your original hackel Laughing

Personally, I prefer a "voice over" explanation - reading a moving text explanation detracts my eye from the tying action, and you could then dispense with the annoying music.

Otherwise, a well tied fly on an interesting video.

I finally managed to break my run of blanks on the canal. My first Perch since January which came to a small crayfish soft plastic on the BFS ultralight kit.

I had a real grind of a day at Pitsford yesterday.
£77 for 2 predator tickets and a boat for the day, so a good profit for Anglian Water. All the boats were booked to trout and predator fishing, so when we loaded the boat to find the engine did not work, I was worried about not getting out. Fortunately, we were allocated another boat and set off.
It was blooming hard work all day, I ran through the normal collection of lures with zero response (not even a follow). I finally snagged a small jack pike on a spoon and we hooked some rouge rainbows and a brown along the way.
The heavens opened at around four o’clock after that passed, I spent my time with a dropshot set up trying to find an elusive perch, to no avail.

On Monday I had another vain attempt to lure fish the canal, my tactic was ultra-light and small lures. Despite the gin clear water, fish visible and even a few follows, I could not catch anything again.

The most interesting part of the day was watching a large Mayfly hatch from this canal section. I have since found out that the Colne runs through this section and it is over a chalk base.

I decided to return yesterday (Thursday) with the fly rod, my thinking was, a) I could practice my roll cast. b) It would be good river flyfishing practice on moving water. C) I might catch a fish.
I took my 4# and trout flies, set up with a tapered leader, an indicator and a Diawl Bach on the point. To cut a long story short I ticked all the above boxes and had a fun time doing it, despite some strange looks from passers-by.

I had my second session at Pitsford with the lure rod yesterday. Lloyd and I decided that it was worth a go just to get out and fish from a boat despite the warm water conditions.

My plan to dropshot for the perch was some what hindered by gusting wind. When we did find a more sheltered area the dropshot produced a small perch but that was it. A tad disappointing as the fish finder showed fish in the area.
Most of the day was spent casting a selection of lures, fishing various depths and areas from deep drop offs to thick weed beds. We covered the whole reservoir from the dam wall down. We even discovered a few likely looking spots for future trips.
Despite the water temp of 21 + there seemed to be the odd trout moving and occasionally chasing the lures. One boat at the dam seemed to be catching trout, dare I say targeting them on lures.

I ended the day with two perch, one small pike and a trout. The bigger perch and pike took curly tails.
The wind dropped at around 5pm but the dropshot proved unsuccessful on this occasion despite changing lures and fish showing on the electronics.
In the last hour, Lloyd had a huge swirl to a large jig fly and then had the fish on only for it to let go.
We enjoyed the day despite the poor results.
