I only get to fish there early or late on in the season these days. March, April and maybe a day or two in early May. This year I never needed a sunk line in those early trips. After that guiding on the chalkstreams takes over. This year I was away from mid-June through to the 9th August and when I returned the water temperatures were well up and the place was closed down. It took for ever for those to drop, and I believe I have already posted my thoughts on why that is.

I will try to get in a day or two backdrifting with boobies which is not my favourite method, but being pragmatic if one wants to catch a few trout at Farmoor in the winter, it is best to leave the floating lines and nymphs at home.

Next year I am going to try to pester the rangers into posting up water temperature readings through the water column on a regular basis and I suggest that others do the same. That way the message might get home that we, the customers, are concerned about the way Thames are managing the fishery.

All for that Wylye and whilst at it perhaps even get them to give a weekly update on catches, water quality and stocking. This year such reports have been very sporadic and doesn't help the travelling angler.

Alan and I are going tomorrow.
Lets hope there are a few fish that did not feel a Bristol hook.
Fingers crossed.

Think it was more like 13 Doug. This year was the record. May be wrong but fairly sure.. Some very competent anglers out.

Well we would not have won the match but we did well considering the cold easterly wind.
We got a few tips from Mark, so once on the water we headed for the suggested area and started to fish.
The wind was light to start so we fed the line out but started to retrieve the flies to put a bit of movement in to them and it was not long before we started to get some fish.
As the wind picked up during the morning we changed tactics to try and find the key to consistent catching..it was good fun and we had our share of fish.
With out doubt the fly of the day for me was a pink booby on a dropper it took all of my fish, I will be calling it half a Barbara Very Happy
At around 1.30 Alan changed to a DI5 and had two fish on two casts so we thought that was the method and decided to go in for a cuppa and a bit to eat .
When we came back out for the last hour and a half it was a different story, Alan's new line method did not produce the fishing we expected.
The day total for the boat was 13 fish all returned and most of them came to the pink boobie..
It was a good day fishing with Alan and a good way to finish 2019 at Farmoor.

Happy new year all.
Peter

Peter has summed our day up very well. Very Happy

It didn't take him long to realise that it was pink that they wanted but I made the mistake of waiting until he had 3 in his net before I took the hint. Embarassed Rolling Eyes

We drifted over a lot of water today but never found a 'sweet spot' like we have on previous occasions so we were scratching for the odd pull here and there. It was good fun though and always great to share a boat with Peter. Very Happy

Roll on 2020! Cool

Alan

As a post script to our last session of 2019.
I meant to say a big Thank You to Mark who gave us some good pointers to flies and location 👍 Very Happy

I asked Mark (the Farmoor warden) who was on duty about changes for 2020 but he said they had not been told of any changes to prices etc. There are also no updates on No1 boats and a dock and no firm commitment to opening it up to float tubes and kayak fishing.

We are off to Cornwall next week so I guess my first visit of 2020 will be late January depending on the weather. I have some ideas about refining my back drifting technique which will be fun to try but I am sure it is nothing that Mark and the match men have not thought of 🤔

Looking forward to 2020 and hopefully a more consistent year of fishing.
