If they were RNLI instructors then the jackets would have been 275N Crewsavers. Most fisheries used to offer 150N Crewsavers, but as many anglers are now somewhat larger Farmoor for one now uses the 275's. Bear in mind that it is impossible to get out of a pool or back into a boat while wearing an inflated l/j.

I tipped over the kayak in the canal the other day, I was of course wearing my PFD (personal flotation device) and at no point did I feel at risk of drowning. The surprise for me was how high the banks are when you are trying to pull yourself out.
I own a 275 newton life jacket that gets a regular service but as Wylye mentioned you have to use the supplied Farmoor life jackets, at other waters I know my life jacket is safer than those supplied.
At less than 65KG I will/would float forever in my life jacket and my PFD (which is rated to over 80KG).
In theory fishing from a Kayak you should wear a wet or dry suit to prevent thermal shock and hypothermia, my dip in the canal was in normal fishing cloths and I was not that cold but did pack up and go home. I have wondered what would happen to the average angler in a lot of layers if they took a dip on a big water in winter.
