With suitable croc hunting weather forecast, yesterday saw me at CVL early doors, having tucked into my hearty breakfast at the Stoke Inn at 7.30.

Stats .... Wind first off from the south but very light, only just moving my boat - then an hour+ worth of flat calm until 10ish, when a 5ish MPH westerly slowly developed. Water clarity - a measured (silver fly at rod tip and shove it downwards ) 8 feet of my CPX got wet Laughing Water temp 19 degrees.

Fished my Guideline 3-1 with various flys attached, at differing depths and speeds/types of retrieve from 8.30 for absolutely no interest whatever until 1.30 when my first hit happened. A juddering take that could almost be described as feeling the hook grating over the teeth of a large Pike - needless to say it didn't stick, despite 2, hard, strip strikes Embarassed

Second hit happened a few minutes later - good solid hook-up that didn't feel quite right - not Pike like - the reason became obvious when a magenta flash, rather than the expected green happened below my well bent rod tip - A Rainbow that when netted and weighed in my McLeans went 6 pounds 3 oz. Quickly released unharmed, I implored the fishing gods to send me a green one Rolling Eyes Went for my camera for a quick snap, only to discover that it wasn't in my pocket - t'was at home still in the battery charger Rolling Eyes Embarassed

Third, and as it happens, last hit of the day came around 2.30 - A solid slam from what could only be a Pike - a very violent scrap ensued - She and me giving our all - until finally I had her enveloped in the McLeans where She tipped the scale at 14 pounds Very Happy Surprisingly, all 3 hits came to the same 6" Silver wiggle tail fly - even the Rainbow Laughing

'Twas getting uncomfortably hot and humid out on the lake now - so deciding that conditions where no longer conductive to fly piking - I gave it best - and was pleasantly surprised to meet up with Alan (allrounder) and Ian (bovver) in the carpark pre their trouting as I came off early.

All in all a good day - but would have enjoyed a few more Pike Rolling Eyes - Cheers till my next visit ......... Tony Cool

I think you picked the right half of the day, Tony. Great result on a very warm and humid day. Cool
