I had hoped to get up Thursday evening but sadly the quieter week I had planned has gone out of the window so I'll be up sometime Friday instead.

Have booked a minibus for us and Bob said he'd drive some of us up there too. Taxi pick up is 7.45pm with a return at 9.30pm.

Saturday night will be an early bbq as some of the chaps will wan to go to the pub to watch the Champions League final which kicks off at 7.45pm. Have made inquiries to for a different cab company as the one on Thursday night can't do Saturday night.

Elinor is really, really hotting up! Latest fishery report:

Welcome to the Elinor Fishing Report

A fantastic week for boat anglers with some large fly hatches that brought the bigger fish on the feed.

April 30th - May 6th

226 anglers caught 1422 fish of which 1121 were returned

Best Fish
9lb 11oz S Millar, Scotland, black buzzer, boat
8lb 8oz Adrian Portlock, Daventry, blue flash damsel, boat
8lb 6oz Jason Cooke, Roade, black buzzer, boat
8lb 4oz Trevor Partridge, Corby, black/green lure, boat
8lb 2oz Jason Cooke, Roade, black buzzer, boat
7lb 2oz Trevor Partridge, Corby, black/green lure, boat
6lb 8oz Greg Potts, Whittlesey, black buzzer, boat
6lb 1oz Luke Key, Market Harborough, black buzzer with gold cheeks, boat
5lb 8oz Steve Windram, Stoney Stanton, boat
5lb 7oz Gavin Cairns, Newmarket
5lb 7oz Phillip Slane, Old Weston, cats whisker, boat
5lb 6oz Terry Caddy, Northampton, boat
5lb 6oz Tim Ward, Kirby Muxloe, black traffic light buzzer, boat
5lb 2oz David Dearman, Peakirk, olive cruncher
5lb 2oz Neil Groves, Oundle, black/green lure
Brown 3lb 6oz Steve Owen, Kettering, hares ear

Best Areas
Bank - coarse bank, lagoon, shallow bay, gravel bar, east arm
Boat - west arm, gravel bar, down middle

Best Patterns
black or olive buzzer, olive cruncher, small damsel, olive or hares ear cdc, black hopper, tequila blob/fab, white/green lures.

A much warmer week saw some excellent fly hatches with fish gorging themselves on buzzers, hawthorn fly and alders.
The water is crystal clear again so the warm bright conditions made bank fishing trickier over the bank holiday weekend although Liam Johnson managed 18 from the coarse bank yesterday by fishing his buzzers deep and slow.
Top score on the boats last week was Andy Lane from North London who had 49 on black crunchers in the morning and olive or black cdc in the afternoon. On the same day, Friday, Chris Redhead from Whittlesey had 40 on s14 buzzers.
Prospects for boat fishing remain excellent. Please book boats in advance as Elinor is busy at the moment.
Bank fishing should be easier in the cooler temperatures forecast for later this week.

The latest edition of Trout Fisherman magazine (issue 509) has a centre page feature on Elinor and includes a dvd with Iain Barr and Gareth Jones bank fishing here.

Sunday May 6th
Kirby Muxloe Fly Fishers had 7 pairs fishing a boat match.
A total of 67 fish were weighed in with plenty more returned. Biggest fish 5lb 6oz by Tim Ward
1. Tim Ward/John Foster 12 fish 28lb 3oz
2. Frank Parker/Russ Jackson 12 fish 27lb 12oz
3. Richard Dayman/Malcolm Peck 12 fish 26lb 6oz

Next Stocking
May 8th & 11th

Have ordered the meat now chaps. I might be able to add some to the order when I collect it if there is a latecomer!
I have added James, a friend of Kevin's who came with us to the Carp Fly Fishing day. He's a returnee to fly fishing so might need a bit of help with his casting.

I trust some slice sausage and haggis will not go amiss?
Haven't got the black pudding this year.
Does anyone want the well-fired rolls. if so, I need to know soonish.

James is a mate of mine that used to fish when he was a wee nipper. Where he is concerned this weekend it will be really appreciated if all the more experienced fisherman would give help and advice and maybe share flies if you are catching.

I will be lending him one of my rods and reels Very Happy flies and landing net. If anyone would like to take him out on a boat that would help his casting as from the bank he will struggle I think.

Cheers for reading/helping

I attended the Elinor Social over the weekend and had a great time as usual.

I picked Steve (blondie) up on Thursday around 1pm and after a quiet drive up and a break we arrived at around 4.30pm. Up until now the weather had been great and it was good to meet up with old friends and new ones over a can or two in the sun but by the time we left for our usual pre-Social evening meal at 7.30 the rain had arrived and it lasted all night until around 9am the following day. Sad

I must admit the change in the weather dampended my spirits somewhat if you pardon the pun, but in fact Friday turned out to be a wonderful 'soft' misty day with barely a breath of wind which is possibly my favourite fishing conditions. Owner Ed predicted a lot of fish would be moving on top and he was right, but Steve and I were were more impressed with his tales of pike to 16lb falling to trout anglers and him finding a dead pike in the margins earlier in the year estimated at 20lb, so we elected to pike fly fish to begin and then go over to the dries in the afternoon.

Last season Steve gave me a schooling on how to catch pike and he started where he left off this time too, getting a pull on his very first cast and then landing 3 or four and losing probably as many again. I couldn't buy a pull until late in the morning a small pike came steaming out of the depths to nail my fly at the end of the retrieve and that was it for me.

After a break we went back out with the dry fly rods and we found fish to cast to all over the lake but they were not easy to catch. The best approach was to target small groups of fish rather than individual fish and more than once I pulled the fly out of their mouths! Embarassed We ended up with two each with Steve getting his on Hoppers and mine coming to Bobs Bits and Klinks. Sadly there wasn't an evening rise to speak of but I did manage a last fish from the bank on a Tadpole as the light fell.

After that we were met on Saturday morning by the return of warm and sunny conditions with a stronger breeze so we decided to go back after the pike again, thanks to Nigel (Officer Clipboard) who kinds loaned me a #9 weight after I snapped my my trusty old Bloke #8 at the ferrule during a particularly aggressive cast. Embarassed However normal service was quickly resumed as Steve started getting pulls and fish while my fly was ignored until one small Jack kindly jumped on my fly towards the end of a drift and I lost another that ejected the fly before leaving the water like a Polaris missile! After that we decided to fish for trout in the afternoon again but this time we found the going very tough indeed and we both blanked, despite trying everything we could think of. I think Steve had the right idea ...

So another great Social with a great bunch of guys which ended too soon for us. Special thanks to those who made it all happen and to Nigel for the loan of his #9 weight, and particularly to Kev (Kevzim) for the use of his battery and electric outboard over the weekend. It would be a lot of hard work without it! Laughing

Until the next one ...

Another excellent well organised social. Great to see the regulars and some new faces. Craic and food was up to the usual high standard. The fishing was challenging on the Saturday with the fish ignoring the usual blobs. I caught on Griffiths gnat (2), Olive flashback nymphs (4), Wickham, GRHE, shipmans and one on a blob, all on a floating line. Had numerous offers to dries without taking, but they were taking other flies on the washing line. I almost got the hand of satan as my tube had a puncture on the right hand side, and had to be pumped up every 5 minutes or so. Most annoying when fish are moving around you.
Looking forward to the next one at Ladybower.

Elinor was my first social and it’s still the one I look forward to most, the freedom, wildlife and of course the well run fishery make it a special place to come to. All that aside what makes it really brilliant are the great lengths that Nigel goes to, ensuring we really only have to turn up and enjoy it and of course the camerarderie that everyone else brings. Thanks to everyone that was there for affording us Liverpool fans the opportunity to reduce the numbers on Saturday, it ultimately didn’t go our way but the Viva Espana conga that greeted our return cheered us up. Saturday morning was the only really inclement weather we had to endure which was a great relief considering the gloomy forecast. Well done to Richard for taking the unveiling of the Buddha Bar in such good spirits!!! This was my best social yet for fishing too so roll on Elinor 2019!
