Eyebrook has been on top form this week and doing what it does best, “world class top of the water sport”. That is until a rare occurrence happened and we had good weather during a bank holiday weekend! Water temperature has now risen to 20 degrees which has unfortunately put the fish off the surface. With cooler longer nights, however this should soon fall again to a more sensible temperature.
Monday to Friday fished exceptionally well for August. Boat anglers were drifting over the deeper water and caught well on dries such as Shipman’s buzzers, Hoppers in various colours and emerger patterns. Bank anglers also enjoyed good sport with more fish showing an interest in fry around the weed beds.
The week got off to a good start, Monday saw a rod average of 5.77. Andrew Thomas caught 6 fish including a super 5lb 2oz rainbow on a Diawl Bach fished on a washing line. Mark Hunt also had a very prosperous evening session. Netting 10 fish, 5 of which were over 3lbs. Mark caught all his fish on CDC’s and ermeger patterns. (Pictures on our Facebook page flyfishstore )
Peter Baker enjoyed the great sport on Tuesday. The fish were coming to the dries thick and fast. Peter caught around 20 rainbows on a mix of dry fly patterns whilst drifting the main basin. He found the Yellow Owl CDC and black bits to be most successful. Member Carl Cower enjoyed his afternoon session catching 7 ‘lumps’ on fry patterns from around the weed beds.
Wednesdays average remained a steady 5.4 with masses of fish in the surface. Dries worked extremely well and conditions were perfect. K Haken and J Smith caught 15 fish between them on a mixture of Diawl Bachs and Hoppers. Warden Toff Crowther fished during a few spare hours he had. Catching and returning 9 fish he caught on CDCs and fry patterns.
The top-class sport continued into Thursday and Friday. Trever Ashby and Ken Walters had their best day of the season. Continuously catching fish on a mix of dries and nymphs whilst drifting in front of the dam wall. Andrew Rogers caught 12 fish on a hopper whilst drifting over deep water.
The weather change for the weekend. It was flat calm for much of Saturday and Sunday with not a cloud to be seen in the sky. Brian Skey did very well despite the conditions. He drifted from the Chestnut tree to the Willows and caught 5 fish on a Diawl bach fished on a washing line.
Top tips for fishing dries at Eyebrook- Fish from a drifting boat, you will cover more water and therefore more fish. The fish are very dispersed at this time of year. Make lots of short casts and cast to any rising fish. Fish with a single fly. You can often spook fish when water clarity is clear whilst fishing with to many flies. Or flies tied to close together. Fish with as thinner diameter tippet material as you can but be awarethere’re a lot of hard fighting fish at Eyebrook! Use ‘Mud’ on your tippet material particularly in bright or calm conditions. This will help disguise your leader.

We hope this weather will soon pass and water tempeatures will lower. We will be stocking a further 550 fish this week bringing the season stocking to over 20,000!!

We can certainly feel Autumn is upon us at Eyebrook. Cooler air temperatures and stronger winds this week made the fish reluctant the take off the surface. Nymphs, lures and fry patterns have worked best. Water temperature is currently at 16.5 and is steadily dropping each day. A good number of quality fish have been caught on fry patterns around Sam’s dyke and the top end of the reservoir.
This week has seen a steady rod average of between 1.83 and 6.5.Monday fished well with an average of 3.9. With warmer air temperatures and a steady breeze dries worked well. J Poote caught 7 fish for his evening session on orange dries whilst drifting the basin. Neil Benjamin and Ian Simmons enjoyed their first day of their three-day trip. They netted 18 fish between them on black buzzers. Warden Jobe Burnham had an evening targeting thefry feeders and was rewarded with an 8lb brown trout which he safely returned to the water ( Pictures on our facebook page flyfishstore)
Tuesday saw the highest rod average of the week, a super 6.5 fish a rod and every angler caught a fish! M White caught 16 fish on a sunken daddy whilst fishingin front of the dam wall. Darren Lee caught 12 excellent fish from his float tube in the main basin. There is no launch for float tubes at Eyebrook.
The English Disabled fly fishers held the national Eliminator on Wednesday. 11 anglers fought it out for 7 places in the 2018 England team. The day was won by Stuart Hume. He bagged his 8 fish for a weight of 15lb 2oz and caught the biggest fish of the day at 2lb 10oz. For the full results and if you are interested in joining the English Disabled Fly fishers look on their website www.englishdisabledflyfishers.org.uk.
Higham ferrers fly fishers also enjoyed a friendly match on Wednesday. 14 anglers caught 41 fish. Best 6 fish on the day went to Pip Jeff’s with a bag weight of 13lbs 01oz.
Bank fishing has improved this week with fish feeding on fry around the weed beds. John Dracup caught a cracking 4lb 4 oz rainbow from the Belle. R Baker walked the Leicester bank and found fish feeding close in at the Island. He caught 6 fish on hoppers.
Conditions were challenging into the weekend. Strong winds, Heavy rain and thunderstorms played havoc with the fishes feeding habbits. J Jacobs fished the sheltered water and caught 8 fish on a bibio. D Tranter Caught 6 fish from the main basin on a mixture of nymphs and lures. Brothers Lee and Graham Henfrey boat fished and caught 5 fish between them for a morning session. Graham only learned to fly fish a week ago and has already caught 10 fish this week from 3 outings. I think good angling runs in the family !
The forecast for Monday 11th, Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th is for strong winds. Please contact the lodge prior to making a trip to the reservoir to avoid disappointment.
