I thought you might like to see some classic USA reels.

Bottom left is a tiny Penn 9M which I use for bass and light fishing, quite difficult to get hold of. I've modified this one by removing the levelwind and fitting a power handle. About the size of an Abu 5000. No brakes or ball bearings, just bushings.

Bottom right is an immaculate Penn 160 "Beachmaster" with red torpedo handle. USA made these went of production in 1995 but this one is a fair bit earlier, once again no fancy brakes, about in between an Abu 6000 -7000 size.

Top left a very good Penn 155, not made any more, this one is from the 90's I think, once again no fancy extras, about the size of a 7000.

Top right, still in manufacture a Penn 310 GT2, this one has ball bearings but no brakes, holds about 330 yard of 15lb mono, levelwind removed, from the family of the most popular reel in the world the Penn 320.

All of these reels are in regularly use and are not ornaments.

They have all been stripped down, spindles polished etc and other little tweeks which I won't bore you with. A couple may soon be treated with magnets.

Solid basic easy to work on, sometimes! USA made reels, not worth a fortune, but a couple of rare ones and they can hold their own against modern reels.

Bill

You might like this little Daiwa beastie then, note the monomag tourney casting conversion on the right.

It says "Speed Shaft" on it Bill. Thank heavens everyone on this forum is grown up enough not to snigger like school children about that! Razz

I'm quite happy with my 7HTs Mags at the moment now I've got used to winding in with my right hand.

I got rid of all my lefties, mine are all RHW apart from a little gold Abumax which I use single handed on a pistol grip.

What a difference braid makes.

Was lucky enought to score a US made Avet SXJ 5.3 which was delivered yesterday & can hardly wait to try it out.

It is a lever drag reel machined from solid bar stock & is remarkably compact.

Despite the diminutive size it will take 300 mtrs of 20lb braid plus 60 mtrs. of 20lb nylon backing.

They come in five colours but due to high demand supply is very limited.
