Just seen on sport fish's website a rod holder that sticks to the bonnet of the car and one on the roof to allow you to travel with your rods already made up. Just wondering what are other peoples thoughts/experiences as I certainly have never seen them in the flesh but I'm thinking it could cut half the time of setting up once getting to the water.

I have found it particularly useful when I need to be on the bank very early in the morning. I just make my rods up the night before which means I am ready to cast within minutes of arriving while everyone else is struggling to set their rods up in the half light. They are also very useful when you want to move to a new spot as there is no need to disassemble /reassemble your rods, thus saving valuable fishing time.

Although I have had no problem myself, I would avoid driving at high speeds with rods attached and make sure that your bonnet and roof are bone dry when you attach them. I have found that the magnetic /vacuum version will slide on a wet surface so always check and reattach until you are satisfied they are secure.

not the same as fly rods
but my carp rods are 12ft 2 piece and are in rod bag just waiting to have hook length clipped on

During salmon-season in Norway you see lots of cars driving with these rod-carriers.
I have a set of vacuum holders, and they work great.
Never seen it move an inch.

A few tips:
Like Smiffy said, avoid low branches (and other objects)
Make sure the hood and roof are dry and clean; Little particles of sand may cause scratches on the car.
Avoid high speeds, max speed in Norway is 80 km/h (55mph) I would not like to go much faster...
Make sure your fly is secured properly, this speaks for itself. (Although I think it would give great you-tube movies...)

I've used the double Mag type for years (same set). Up to 5 spey rods or 6 single handers on the top of my Jeep Liberty. With the low angle, you can drive 70+ mph and they don't even 'wiggle.' Only thing you HAVE TO REMEMBER IS if you come up behind a '18-wheeler' (very big truck) they toss wind around like all hell. Hold back and stomp on the gas and get by into calmer wind flow.
