Went out on my mates boat yesterday. Calmish seas and foggy until about 3pm.

We left Eastney and motored to the forts in the Solent channel. There are 3 forts and we went to the middle one. When we arrived, we saw a fantastic bait ball of mackerel which were herding the whitebait to surface and attacking them! The seagulls were diving into the mackerel and then after it had died down, the seagulls finished off the dead whitebaits left floating on the surface. It attack didn't last long, 4 or 5 seconds but it was fantastic to watch, the water was boiling with fish! That was just one instance, it happened all morning and all over the place. One minute they were in front you and within casting distance, the next behind the boat some distance away. I managed to get 3 mackerel on the fly, great fun as they put up a terrific fight! Could have, and should have, got a lot more but the boat had to be in the right spot at the right time, no point in chasing them as as soon as a boat got near, they disappeared. They was also a lot of boat traffic which didn't help, pleasure boats, jet skis, fishing boats and charter mackereling boats.

When the tide stopped running, so did the fishing. However, we motored back into the channel and into about 80 foot of water. we waited there for a while until the tide started to come back in again and had 2 dogfish and 2 rays to the boat using squid and mackerel pieces on the bottom. One ray was over 10lb and took ages to get in.

We left at about 4pm to come back and spoke to other anglers as we put the boat away. The other guys also saw the mackerel baitballs and they were fishing in other areas some distance away from where we were. One of the guys went fishing for plaice and gave us some of the fish he didn't want!

Good day out and we are have BBQ'd mackerel tonight and plaice tomorrow! Very Happy

Oh, we also saw a pair of ospreys sitting on a ledge on one of the forts!!
