Salmon fishing was PICKING UP this past week. There are springs in the Sidney Channel and anglers have been getting a few while trolling close to the bottom. Several anglers were testing the new Rhys Davis UV Blue Pearl Mini Strip and all hit fish. Spoons have been good recently with Green and Glow colors producing best. The best soft plastic lures to use for springs now are Glo Below, Pistachio and Purple Haze Squirts. Small anchovies or Tiny Strip have been the best natural bait.

Salmon fishing was SLOWER this past week. We’ve only heard of a couple of springs weighing 10 & 8 lbs being caught in Sidney Channel. It was slow at Moresby Island although there was lots of bait there. Spoons have been good recently with Green and Glow colors producing best. The best soft plastic lures to use for springs now are Glo Below, Pistachio and Purple Haze Squirts. Small anchovies or Tiny Strip have been the best natural bait.

Salmon fishing was SLOW this past week. Not many boats went out for salmon and not many caught salmon. That said, we heard of a 14 lb spring caught on a spoon near Coal Island, a12 lb spring from Moses Point caught on anchovy and a 8 lb spring from Moresby caught on anchovy. Small anchovies or Tiny Strip have been the best natural bait. Spoons have been good recently with Green and Glow colors producing best. The best soft plastic lures to use for springs now are Glo Below, Pistachio and Purple Haze Squirts.

Salmon fishing was EXCELLENT this past week. The Sidney Anglers Association held their Premier derby on Sunday and they had the most salmon weighed in ever. Twenty nice springs were taken and the winner was Grant MacPherson with a 20 lb 13 oz spring caught in the Sidney Channel. Second place went to Bill Macris for a 19 lb 14 oz spring caught near Coal Island. Third place went to Bob Haney for a 16.1 lb spring caught near Sidney Spit on an anchovy fished in a Purple Flash Rhys Davis Bullet Roll Anchovy Special. The largest halibut weighed 23.2 lbs and was caught by Bruno Bauer. Some of the old timers are saying that the fishing recently has been as good as it’s ever been. Also, a lot of the fish have been quite shallow, 40 to 50 feet and close to shore. There has been bait balls in the area and birds working the bait. Small anchovies or Tiny Strip have been the best natural bait. Spoons have been good recently with Green and Glow colors producing best. The best soft plastic lures to use for springs now are Glo Below, Pistachio and Purple Haze Squirts.

Salmon fishing was EXCELLENT once again this past week. Nice springs up to 15 lbs have been caught near Sidney Spit, Coal Island and Moresby Island. Some of the old timers are saying that the fishing recently has been as good as it’s ever been. Also, a lot of the fish have been quite shallow recently, 40 to 50 feet, and close to shore. There has been bait balls in the area and birds working the bait. Small anchovies or Tiny Strip have been the best natural bait. Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week. The Sidney anglers’ Association held their Annual Spring Derby on May 23rd and quite a few nice salmon were weighed in. First place went to Clive Lane for a 24.4 lb spring caught on anchovy. Clive caught the fish near Bamberton, in Saanich Inlet, at 185 feet while using a Rhys Davis Bulletroll Anchvoy Special. Second place went to Bruno Bauer fro a 15.3 lb spring caught near Coal Island. Third place went to Colin franks fro a 15 lb spring caught on anchovy near Saancihton Spit. Fourth place went to Laura Harris for a 13.7 lb spring caught on anchovy fished in a Purple Haze Bulletroll Anchvoy Special. The top Junior Angler was 10 year old Maxwell Harris who caught a 7.8 lb spring on an anchovy fished in a Purple Haze Bulletroll Anchvoy Special. We’ve been told that all the springs caught on anchovies were taken with the newly released Rhys Davis Bulletroll Anchvoy Special. Saanich Inlet was quite productive and several other springs up to 12 lbs were caught in the Pat Bay area. Another interesting note was that one angler caught and released two coho up to six pounds. We’ve also heard of some big springs coming from near the Powdwer Wharf. Anchovies or Tiny Strip have been the best natural bait recently. Spoons have been good as well with 3.5” or 4” Green and Glow colors producing best. The best soft plastic lures to use for springs now are the Glo Below, Electric Chair and Purple Haze Squirts.

Salmon fishing was GOOD this past week for sockeyes near the Pender Bluffs. The sockeye have been shallow and we were told that trolling was best at 17 and 18 feet on the downrigger. Use pink squirts on short 18” leaders to target the sockeye. For springs, fishing right on the bottom with Anchovies or Tiny Strip is your best bet these days in the Sidney Channel. Spoons have been good as well with 3.5” or 4” Green and Glow colors producing best. The best soft plastic lures to use for springs now are the Glo Below, Electric Chair and Purple Haze Squirts.
