As a fly-fisher who spends more of his time after coarse fish I can understand people who say "What the hell do you need a double hander for?". Well, it may sound strange but since watching some videos of anglers using these contraptions I've had this urge to buy one. No good reason really, just liked the idea of being able to use one. Some of the shit-holes I fish for pike have extremely limited back casting opportunities so I figured that a DH would do the job better with regards rolling a fly.
What's the matter with you Rich I hear you cry? Just learn to roll cast a 9/10# SH like everybody else does........hmmmm, whilst I can (just about) it's not my way of thinking.
See, the trouble is, and I refer you to the title of this thread, I like to try everything (fishing-wise before you start Myangle ) and double handed casting seemed very absorbing to me, so a year ago I bought a Shakespeare Expedition 15' 6-piece 10/11# for next to nothing to give it a go. I got competent with it and it even had an outing in South Wales for Salmon and Sea-Trout (blanked), the only time it was used in anger for what it was designed for! It was a bit heavy but did for me at the time.
Anyway, about a month ago I was out down the local river for pike and decided to fish the section with a high hedge 6ft behind me. "I'll get the double hander out" I thought and for half an hour I had a great time rolling the fly across the river until disaster struck when, having forgotten myself, went for the big "I am", initiated a massive back cast and unknown to me at the time, caught the fly in the hedge. Performing a perfect powerful forward stroke I was horrified by the sound of a mighty "CRACK" as the rod split apart in several places, none of which were within the manufacturers designated positions.
Faced with this tragedy I was left with only one option as a confirmed Tackle Tart. Buy a new one! (repairs to the Shakey would have been pointless and expensive). Taking the advice of a seasoned Salmon fisher I'm now the proud owner of a Redington 15' 4-piece 10#. It's a whole lot lighter and easier to cast (for me) than its predecessor and still fits horizontally in the boot! I'm looking forward to decimating old Esox as well as the carp with it in the most confined of spaces! Just need to remember what's behind me!
The rod itself looks really good in a colour that from a distance resembles a split-cane!!! I'm using a Pitsford Pirate WF11F with it either as advertised or with 10' intermediate or sinking leaders. Once I've caught something (D'OH) with it I'll post some pics up.

Actually, the weather can be quite pleasant in spring, however it does get windy, you have been warned

Don't think it's quite big enough
Actually, I've always fancied a go with what the Americans call Switch Rods. Something like a 12ft. #5 but they seem hard to find and are very pricey. _________________ Roy |

I feel quite honoured to be classed in the same category as the ultimate Tackle Tart, Uncle Roy, who has, I believe a 50HP hydraulic rod dispenser in his garage capable of presenting any of 200 rods at a rate of 1 every 3 seconds for him to select.

It's not actually in the garage..that houses the Bentleys. It's more of a self contained rod room with dormitory accomodation over for the Drivers and Gardners I'd like to invite you all to stay but it only has twenty beds and we are rather full.
We keep the Washing Machines in an extension at the rear, Bill, as the noise keeps me awake during the afternoons _________________ Roy |

Swished a Zpey 10' #4 - got the feeling it would've benefited from a heavier line/short front loaded head, nulling any advantage, IMHO.
Would be good to give it a longer go with a Wulff TT or the like though.

Is that the thing with the wonky handle Tony? Does it have any advantages?

Earls Court 1980....I was there, Rog sat in a chair through a hole in the wall. Nice one Chris, that song is a bloody classic!
Getting back to the matter in hand, has anybody else tried using a double hander fishing for anything other than salmon? Or am I just off my rocker?

Yes, that the handle is removable and the rod can then be used as a normal single hander
Wouldn't mind a day with a few different line setups etc to give it a thorough test.
