I had only got a 2 fish ticket as Lechlade as I wanted to get back to see the bog trotters take on the convicts, so that was me done for the day. Top days fishing with the usual challenges but plenty of rewards. Most fishermen had one fish before I left, aside from the few who were rooted to their favourite spot and not moving to where the fish were. WHY do people do this??

Well done. I suppose people get rooted to the spot when they see a shoal of fish and work on the law of averages that eventually one will succumb to their efforts. I've done it myself at times and it does work and sometimes it doesn't as you well know Wink If they can't see any fish then perhaps they just like the serenity of the place without all the hassle of pulling a fish in. Laughing

These people were rooted to the usual spots on the 2 peninsulas, there were no fish moving by them so I have no idea why they stayed. The lake was alive in other areas and there was plenty of space to fish.

I guess they're not as blood thirsty as you Laughing

To right!

I will be setting my Crayfish trap this week to see if I can catch a few for xmas! Either that or mate and I are going to sit about eating them quaffing some fine white wine.
I'd wait until nearer Xmas. Frozen shellfish is crap and mushy after a few weeks in the freezer. I'm beginning to sound like you know who Wink

Well after trying to go fishing at lechlade all week, finally got to go yesterday.

Luckily only a very small area of the lake was covered in the ice, making it pretty easy to fish all round the lake.

Arriving late I did not have the pick of the key swims however as I arrived at the lake I could see that this was not really going to matter as fish were being caught everywhere. Within 5 casts I had the first fish on, not the best fight of the day but a great start......8lb 6oz.

I then moved locations, changed flies and wham fish on within 3 casts.....a good 7lber that took an age to land.

I had only got a 2 fish ticket and that was 2 fish in 30 mins......so I had to trudge back to the shop to get another one.....not the cheapest of days then!!

Using the same black lure as before I soon had another fish on, this one was big, a definite double.......however here was the first lesson of the day.....always tie more than one of a pattern......as the hook snapped on this fly causing me to lose the fish......it was a tired fly and has caught many before so I consigned that one to the fishing gods.

Second lesson was learnt a little while after......BUY A BIGGER LANDING NET!! Lost 2 fish to them not fitting in the net and then the hook coming loose! Was turning the air blue with some nicely colourful language.

By this point my fingers were visible but no longer any use, so I decided to have 5 casts at each fishing point round the lake, this resulted in my final fish of the day a good 7lb 6oz one that gave the best fight of the day. After this I continued to go up the lake but caught no more and decided to call it a day.

All in all a great day but it was bloody cold.

Cold and overcast

The last fish of the day....excuse the blurred pics, it was bloody cold and I was shaking.

Yes....I was frozen!

Cold and bright, north westerly breeze.............you could have been mistaken for thinking that fishing would be good today.

I arrived at the lakes and there were two rods bent over....a good sign you would say....

Then a boat returned to the shore....someone had bagged up already and it was only 9.15.

I started the day confidence high, ice formed on the rod, but continued to work my way around my favourite swims......

Alex H turned up and started to giggle at the lack of the fish on the bank, however as time went by it was obvious that the fish had gone completely off. In true Lechlade style the odd fish was caught, but the fishing was really really tough.

We decided to set about using the boat, working our way from buoy to buoy. This did not work......to well.....Alex managed two fish but the struggle went on. We then tried every method and fly under the sun.....boobies, lures, bloodworms, muddlers stripped deep, gold head daddies......even some odd flies never fished before were used.

We moved back to the buoy near the house, and after another hour of whipping the water to a foam, i got my first fish, a nice 6lber.........A blank day avoided, always the first task of any fishing adventure.

Alex left for the day and I continued until dusk, this is where the fun started.

I fished from the bank near the house, and within 10 minutes had a fish on......could this be my first ever double rainbow (despite fishing at lechalde for 3 years)??

5 casts later.....this fish took me down to the backing twice, after a huge fight, this fish was finally landed.....and was bigger than the last, surely I had broken my double duck.

Then 10 minutes later on the same fly again, another huge fight, and it was difficult to see in the dark, however into the landing net popped a 6-7lb brown. Safely returned I called it a day after losing another. The light went altogether and I finished the day very happy with a 6lb, 10lb 6oz and 11lb 8oz rainbow and a 6-7lb brown.

Awesome Laughing Laughing Laughing

Not an easy day on Lechlade!!

I did think of you yesterday, but only briefly Wink Wink
I'm hoping the wind changes by Thursday as I'm off to my local fishery and hoping for a better result than last week.
